Kalank nahi ishq hai kajal piya...

Very true..

Complicated and twisted love stories set in the pre-independence era.

1946, Dev Chaudhry(#AdityaRoyKapoor) is getting married to Roop(#AliaBhatt) as his ailing wife is dying from cancer. The marriage is her last request which is backed up by her egoistic and pragmatic Balraj Chaudhry.

Being married against her wishes turns Roop into a rebel and demands to pursue her passion of singing but will only be tutored by Bahar Begum(#madhuridixitnene ) in a gully that has muslims in majority, where she meets Zafar (#varunDhawam ) and a simple friendship. Zafar known to be a ladies man and a good looking orphan who has survived on the streets and turned to be one of the best black smiths in the area.

Roop finds a home away from home in the husnabad and Zafar.

#Mere gusse mai liye gaye ek kadam ne hum sab ki zindagi barbaad kar di...

This movie is about the anger and the repercussions of this young woman in this story.

This movie is about the love a man had for his dying wife and his tensed equation with his father.

This movie is about a 17 year old courtesan falling in love and loosing everything she had.

Last but not the least, the movie is also about an orphan, who fails to see the good in anything in life and trying to correct all the wrong in his life the wrong way.

Story Line - A revenge story story of an orphan against the most powerful man in the city, who is also his father. A story line which is a plot for many a movies in 80's & 90's. The Director Abhishek Varman has tried to create a beautiful picture but assertment of a Sanjay Leela Bhansali art work did not hit the mark as required.

Rating - 2./5

Casting & Acting

Sanjay Dutt - Characterised as special appearance, Balraj Chaudhry was hit on the mark with Sanjay Dutt's par excellance acting talent and the constant frown which he maintained to show an arrogant rich man.

Madhuri Dixit Nene - Seemingly less of screen presence, 2 songs and a dance, Madhuri has showcased a good courtesan but I would want her to have more screen presence as she looked side lined in the story.

Varun Dhawan - A good enactment of a black smith but had a boyish charm to lure the women folk.

Alia Bhatt - Not one of her best performances. She did convince the audience that she was a teenager in distress but not the powerful nature of her character was not shown. She looked too young for the movie at many instances through out the movie. I have seen a much better performance by Alia in many movies over the past years and i felt she has done a better job in SOTY than Kalank.

Aditya Roy Kapoor - Sri Ram

Sonakshi Sinha - A decent job done, given to the fact that her character dies in the movie, she has a total of 20 minutes of screen time in the entire movie, which is may be 15 minutes less than what Madhuri Dixit had.

Kunal Khemu - A very good sub antagonist, who plays at the whims and fancies of Zafar and turns against him when found out about his deceit. This movie shows a potential good villian yet to be discovered by many directors. ( Maybe it's his voice, but his acting definitely covers that up)

Overall - 2.5/5

Songs

Pritam - As usual, brilliant

Background Score

Sanchit & Ankit Balhara - Very Good

Rating - 5/5

In all, I wanted to run out of the theatre in the first half but the movie picked up pace in the second half which gave the movie a comment in a phrase " Decent - but not really"

Overall Rating - 2.5/5

I can pass.
