Bharat(Salman Khan ), a show man, a laborer on oil field, a navy officer and now retired and a store owner somewhere in Delhi.
Bharat's story starts with children playing kanche in a school in Mirpur when they happen to hear two teachers talking about the chaos and commotion during partition. When the family boarded the train leaving Mirpur their second child Gudiya slipped from Bharat's shoulder on to the platform and Gautam also left the train to search for the child and promised Bharat to meet him at his aunty's shop next to Dilli refugee camp where he meets his best friend for life, Vilayati Khan who was orphaned during the same riots in India. Bharat takes his mother and siblings to his aunt's shop where they are greeted by an uncle who do not like them.
In order to support the family, Bharat takes up any job on the road such as newspaper boy, shoe polisher, car washer etc It is during one of these days when he sees children doing road side circus and decided to join them as a source of livelihood. Bharat worked as a Well of Death Stunt man dressed as ELVIS PRESLEY. Salman rocks the costume with his bike stunts and dance number with Radha (Disha Patani ), who is his girl friend for the time. The relationship came to an end when Bharat's brother tried the same stunt and got injured and Bharat decided against it for ever.
He meets Kumud Raina (Katrina Kaif) at his next job quest as an oil field worker and he falls in love with her. Katrina Kaif looks the personification of the 70's heroine in her curls and cotton sarees or even the white shirt with high waist khakhees and boots. Following an accident in the oil pipping mine, he comes home for his sister's wedding where also gets an approval of his mother for a live in relationship with Kumud making them the first live in couple in Independent India.
Bharat is also seen as a mechanic in merchant navy vessels in the 1983 for the extra income so as to buy his aunty's Hind Provision Store from his uncle.
Kumud, now the creative head of Zee TV designs a new show, Mere Apne , which would help the partition victims to meet their loved ones either side of Wagah border, where , Bharat along with many others reach to meet their long lost family.
The movie is an exact inspiration of the Korean movie An ode to my father.
Unlike many remakes, this is not something you will regret. The movie has a perfect balance of all emotions and a good flow of events through out the life of a 75 year old man, bit too fit one but still.
There are many unique moments in the movie which makes it very desi and at times very dumb and stupid to digest too. (not giving out details)
Sunil Grover rendered true justice to Vilayati Khan, Bharat's best friend and compatriot during all his journeys. His comic timings are impeccable and very fresh. Nora Fatehi plays a very small role of a dancer turned wife to Vilayati in the movie.
The direction and writing of the movie is well educated and calculated. There are no slips or unwanted character stuffings any where in the movie. The movie has a message, love, friendship and patriotism in the right balance.
The songs are placed accurately and resonated very well with the script of the movie. There is a perfect blend of the songs in the script and the movie.
All in all, this was an Eid ki biriyani, seasoned very good for us.
